Four Things You Must Do When Moving for Your Career
Four Things You Must Do When Moving for Your Career Todayâs post is written by Classy Career Girl Marketing Assistant, Lor Mancera. Thanks Lor! Have you ever thought of moving to a new place to start your career? At some point in your career, you may be faced with a choice of whether or not to relocate to a new city, state or even across the country for your work. When looking for a job in a new location, usually job seekers look for work sooner than later. So if youâre planning to make the brave step of moving without a job in line, here is my checklist that you really need to consider: Research. Moving without a job waiting for you requires additional planning and that means you also need to do your research. Know where youâre going, what the opportunities are there, where you plan to apply for work, where you plan to stay and find the relevant contacts before you leave. Getting enough knowledge of your new place will definitely play a big role in your success once you get there. Network. This is one of those times that networking is crucial so you really want to do it in advance. These are not necessarily professional contacts â" just someone you can talk to on the phone, meet in a café, learn the names of other contacts and start meeting people that can help you locate job opportunities. Check Your Budget. Of course, finances are one of the major considerations for any relocation. Know how long your money can last by planning ahead of time how many months you can make it without a paycheck. Be Ready. Moving to a new place without the assurance of a job is a big risk. In order to get the job you really want, donât be afraid to fail. Be ready because you will learn through trial and error. You might fail sometimes but you should look at failure as a time to grow, reflect, reinvent and ultimately to push you forward because sometimes failure is just the beginning not the end. Once you decide that youâre ready and sure to move, here are some things you need to look into: When moving houses you would need to speak to your bank about your home loan. Selecting your new home will be critical so you may need to make temporary arrangements. Make sure you stay involved and connected with the people from âback homeâ. Experts say that relocating for your career can be one of the most stressful things youll ever face. Theres no doubt about it. Relocating is difficult in many ways, especially for someone who is packing up and leaving a good life behind. What did you learn from a long-distance career move?

Three Words About Your Future Responsible, Respectful and Realistic - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Three Words About Your Future Responsible, Respectful and Realistic - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Incoming freshmen. Heed these words. Why? Career, Contacts and Optics. More on these later, but keep in mind that the way you handle yourself will define your current and future success. Of course, this likely does not come as a surprise to most people. I had the privilege and pleasure of dropping off our son at college this week. It got me to thinking about a few words that might help him and perhaps you too. The more I thought about it I realized these are words that can help anyone and I wanted to share them with you here. Whether you are an incoming freshmen, dropping off your own incoming freshmen or farther along in your career I think these words can help you realize whatâs at stake and react accordingly. Responsible, Respectful and Realistic These are three simple words that can help define your college career and will carry over to your working career too. Youâve done the hard work to get into college. Thatâs a responsibility. The skills you developed to get into college will also help you earn your first job. Now you can continue to hone your skills to make respectful and realistic decisions. While You Are Here What can you do while you are in college? Hopefully some of these skills started long before entering college life, but if they havenât itâs not too late. You can develop skills in college that will directly help you during your time in college. These skills can also be directly applied to your first job and beyond. As you begin to do these consistently they will become habits. College is as good a time as any to start creating habits. College is a great time to create habits that impact the rest of your life. A Bit More on The Three Words Responsible â" There is a lot to be responsible for in college. Just as there is a lot to be responsible for in your first job or your tenth job. I donât want to be a broken record here, but taking your role in college seriously is important. Someone is spending a lot of money on your education. That someone might be you, it might be the university, or it might be your parents. Itâs your responsibility to do everything you can to learn. The beauty of going to college is that you are often on your own for the first time. You have both the privilege and responsibility of taking care of business. This same process applies when you graduate and take on your first career role. Respectful â" There will be a plethora of new things coming your way at 1000 miles an hour. Think about responding and reacting in a respectful manner. There is an old saying about ânot doing anything your mother (or grandmother) would disapprove ofâ â" this is as true in college as it is in business. Remember it. Heed it. Realistic â" Everything may not happen the way you envisioned it. And thatâs ok. Take a step back and and think about how you can evaluate or re-evaluate the situation. Something I mentioned to my daughter a few weeks ago can be applied here. We were in the middle of a lot of tough decisions and it was stressful. I said âAs long as we are still breathing we have optionsâ and I firmly believe this. It may not turn out like how we want, but we can choose to keep moving forward. Career, Contacts and Optics When you keep your responsibility in perspective the people you meet will remember. When you keep confidences the people you work with will develop a mutual level of respect. And when you consistently perform (or better yet excel) at tasks and assignments people will begin to trust that you set realistic goals and expectations. All of which will help you Stand Out in Your Career. Some of the people you meet in college will be with you for a long time and you with them. As you grow in your career the contacts you make in college will have a significant long term impact. Take care of them in a Responsible, Respectful and Realistic manner and they will likely take care of you too.

Why Millennials Are a Great Asset to Your Business Culture CareerMetis.com
Why Millennials Are a Great Asset to Your Business Culture â" CareerMetis.com A few years ago, millennials made up approximately 36% of the workforce. By the year 2020, it is projected that millennials will make up at least halfof the workforce, creating a huge cultural shift for all kinds of businesses. This might not seem like a big deal, but the ramifications of the shift are already taking place and employees are taking notice. The changes are important to recognize and to prepare for since these kinds of shifts within a business also tend to have a large effect on the businessâs culture.evalThe importance of a business culturecannot be overstated; companies who do not value this aspect of their business are not going to succeed nearly as well as a company that values it highly.Culture is what sets a business apart from all of its competitors. It also helps to attract new customers and intrigue potential talent. It is important for businesses to note that as the presence of millennials continues to grow in the workforce, the need for an established busine ss culture is critical. Why Do Millennials Value Business Culture?Years ago, a job was meant to pay the bills. People went to work, got their jobs done and then they came home to take part in things that mattered to them. These days, the idea of choosing a job means a lot more to workers, especially millennials. For this age group, choosing a job means choosing a line of work that is meaningful to them; theyâre looking for businesses that have clear goals and purpose. If a millennial does not share the same values as a company, then chances are theyâll end up looking elsewhere. How Millennials are Improving Business Culturea) Changes to Employee BondingevalWhen it comes to employee bonding and social events, millennials are an asset to business culture because they put an emphasis on trying new things with their fellow coworkers. Whether it be putting together a department-wide sports league, monthly lunch outings at new restaurants, or happy hour at the dive bar next door, millenn ials are game. The atmosphere calls for employees from all departments and all walks of life to force themselves to really engage with one another and work as a unit. Sports like kickball and dodgeball are perfect examples, where employees need to learn each otherâs names, talk on the bench and use strategies to beat the other team.evalThese kinds of events are highly valued by millennials, who see the usefulness of trying new activities together and getting people out of their comfort zones.b) Flexible Work SchedulesThe regular 9-5 that people have been working for years is having its last hurrah, and thatâs largely in part to the values of millennials. This group of workers is much more aware of their personal time and value a flexible schedule that allows for better work/life balance. This doesnât mean that your office is going to be taking advantage of a flexible schedule; rather, it puts an emphasis on coming and going as it works for an employeeâs lifestyle so they can g et their work done when itâs best for them. This change in business culture has seen great improvements for many companies since workers donât feel as confined to a concrete schedule that dictates their life. This kind of relaxed scheduling ensures that projects still get done, but helps to ensure that workers are happier and more productive by coming and going when they feel more comfortable.c) Technological BondingevalMillennials are experts with their gadgets which greatly benefits businesses. In fact, millennials are a great asset to your business because they often encourage some healthy competition and cross-office bonding.Tech toys like the FitBit can allow employees to share their progress with others in the office, and regular competitions can be had to see who works out the most or who has the most steps in a week. Other options like gaming apps can be done on oneâs individual time; however, these games offer cross-office bonding and great conversation in the office t he next day.Other games like Pokémon Go are ideal because they require workers to physically travel around the office or town looking for Pokémon. Augmented reality games like this are a great way to create some friendly competition within the office or even between competing offices.Rewards for the office winners could be something as simple as lunch for the team or a Friday afternoon off.d) Active LifestylesAnother one of the reasons that millennials are a great asset to businesses is because of the value they put on a healthy lifestyle. The shift in culture has seen more employees performing their meetings outside and taking calls outdoors while they get in their steps. There has been an increase in the awareness of how beneficial it can be to get outside during the day, including improved mental health, increased creativity and improved mood.As this notion to get outside makes its way into the workplace, businesses are seeing a shift to a more relaxed atmosphere that encourages employees to work where theyâre most comfortable.CONCLUSIONWhen it comes to improving the culture of a business, itâs not just about building a team of like-minded employees. When an employer forces workers into a specific style of work, it is common that the individual talents of workers wonât be able to flourish.evalThe benefit of including millennials in your team is being inspired by their values to improve the work culture for everyone. That means putting a higher value on their personal time, increasing employee connections and creating a culture that supports employee wellness.Millennials are a great asset to your business. Although theyâve received some judgment for their attitudes in the past, this group of workers has the potential to make a very positive change in your teamâs success.

Application, Testing Interview Advice for Fire Control Operators
Application, Testing Interview Advice for Fire Control Operators In this blog, we will share invaluable tips and advice for those applying to become Fire Control Operators provided by former Kent Fire and Rescue Service Fire Officer and recruitment expert, Richard McMunn. Fire Control Operator: Application: The application process has become more in depth over recent years and HR departments seem to favour the Personal Qualities and Attributes (PQAâs) approach. Within the application they will ask for examples on how you would cover each of the PQAâs. For example: âDescribe how you are a team player and give an example of an occasion where you have had to demonstrate this skill.â The best way to complete this is by describing an event that has involved you within that role. Write it as though the person you are informing has no idea on the subject, and by reading it would understand the process you are explaining. Writing in a âdiaryâ context can also help â" as in a âstep-by-stepâ direction. The more content you can put in the b etter, although try not to âwaffleâ too much with information that is not relevant. Applications with minimal input will be disregarded. Make sure you do some homework â" go on the website and find out as much information about the organisation as you can. This will give you some understanding of the day to day running and expectations of the company.Fire Control Operator: Testing: Audio Typing: This consists of listening to passages read out by an individual or from a sound recording played aloud in the room. The aim of this test is to assess typing speed, spelling and accuracy. It also measures your listening skills and your interpretation of what is being said. The content you provide will be examined. Try to finish the passage where you can but if this is not possible try to make what you have done as accurate and error-free as possible. Word Comprehension: This is the ability to read text, process it and understand its meaning. It is tested by reading a through a pass age and then being asked for a choice of the correct spelling and meaning of a given word. For example: The manâs presence. Could also be written: The manâs presents. Both sound the same but the written context is totally different. Presence = the fact or condition of being present within your immediate surroundings or vicinity. Presents = gifts that are given to someone. Number Recall: This again is either verbally given from a representative or a recording played in the room. A sequence of numbers is given â" initially a low set of numbers, i.e. â2928â. Then, as the test progresses, the length of sequence will increase i.e. â29286473â, and so on. These are written down on your test paper. This test is also used to assess listening, accuracy and memory skills. Check out our other blog for even more in depth information on the Fire Control Operator FCOP Number Recall Test.Fire Control Operator: Interview: If you are accepted for interview following the tests, th en you will be given a date and time. Arrive at least ten minutes prior to this time. This will show you are prompt and good at time keeping â" an essential for an operator. Make sure you present your self in a smart manner. A uniform is provided at the beginning of your role as an operator which is always to be worn to an exact standard. The interviews are held in front of a panel. This will usually consist of the officer in charge of the control room, a HR Representative, the training officer and at least one other watch manager. They will have a list of PQAâs. They will ask you to give examples of how you have used these skills and will also ask why you think you would be suitable for this type of role. They could also potentially give you a scenario and then ask how you would deal with it. You can ask for the questions to be repeated whilst you think on how you can answer them. Even ask if they can give you a few seconds to think on how to give your best answer. As we recommended before, explain your reply in a step-by-step way explaining carefully how your previous experiences have helped you develop these skills. Remember that a great deal of the work within a control is data protected so expect to be asked a question regarding this. Once the interview is completed, and if you are successful, you will then proceed to the medical stage. A date and time will be given for this and attend, as before, promptly and smartly dressed. We wish you the best of luck! This entry was posted in Firefighter, Assessment Centres. Bookmark the permalink. Richard RAF RanksMagistrate Eligibility Criteria
